When you want to find out about Tyrone Nicholas, who grew up in Welland and moved on to become a software engineer at Google, the world's most popular Internet search engine, what do you do? Google him, of course. Presto: 218,000 hits in 0.09 seconds. In a nutshell, that's the service that has made Google a household word. Nicholas is a graduate of Brock University and Welland's Centennial High School. Even before he arrives to talk about his new job, Google has pointed one in the right direction for background material, both right and wrong. Nicholas has a "wish list" on Amazon.com. He's looking for The Godfather DVD collection, "Fear and Trembling" by Soren Kierkegaard and "Java Platform Performance: Strategies and Tactics." And until January, he ran a blog called "Wente Watch," dedicated to taking Globe and Mail columnist Margaret Wente to task.

Charles Schwab -- who was named the Chron 200's CEO of the Year for 2006 -- sat down for an interview with San Francisco Chronicle business reporter Ilana DeBare on March 15, 2007. Here is the transcript of that interview. Chronicle: When you returned from semi-retirement to be CEO in mid-2004, what did you see as the company's problems? Charles Schwab: When I came back -- not that I'd completely left, I was still chairman of the board -- it was time for me to make some really bold decisions. Only a founding father could really do these things, because they were pretty scary for anyone else to do because they were potentially risky. What we had to do was dramatically reduce our cost, but the benefit of the reduced cost was going to be a dramatic reduction in our prices.

Kearns will take the helm at Mohave Community College on Nov. 1 as the school's new chancellor, citing growth and new student programs as the top priorities of his five-year term. In early March, district officials unveiled a plan that would double the institution's size with a proposed 332,000 square feet of new facilities and 178,183 square feet of renovations on MCC's four campuses.In May the board will discuss the project. And depending on their decision, the project could become Kearns' top priority. .
