Most business can be done by phone

For years, I have been writing things like, "just go online," and "check out our online services at www.socialsecurity.gov."

In the back of my mind, I have always known that not everybody has or wants to use the Internet for their Social Security business. Of course, we do encourage people to avail themselves of the services and information offered at www.socialsecurity.gov.

PayPal Entices Small Business

PayPal has launched a product aimed at helping small and medium businesses accept online payments securely and cost-effectively.

The Website Payments Pro product is the first non-hosted payment suite from PayPal, a subsidiary of online auction giant eBay. It includes Express Checkout, Direct Payment API and Virtual Terminal functions, so firms can let shoppers choose how to pay for their purchases.

The Direct Payment API lets businesses accept credit or debit card payments. Buyers enter card details directly on the business's own website and payments are processed through PayPal.

Customers can also pay for their goods using PayPal's Express Checkout, removing the need to re-enter billing or delivery information with every purchase. Buyers can use any major credit or debit card, Banka account or PayPal account balance.

Watch Out for Check Fraud

My college-age son sold a Wii to someone over the Internet for $300. The buyer wrote him a $4,000 check and persuaded my son to cash it and give him the $3,700 left over. The bank cashed the check, but -- you guessed it -- the check bounced and the guy is gone. Is the bank at all responsible, or is my son at fault?

Your son fell for one of the oldest tricks in the arsenal of scam artists. Yes, he is responsible for making good on the loss, and the bank can come after his accounts.

Check fraud is becoming a huge problem, largely because of a federal law that requires banks to make funds available for withdrawal many days before verifying that the money really exists. Or as Michael Benardo, of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.'s cyberfraud and financial-crimes section puts it: "The bank where you're depositing the check doesn't have a responsibility to call the other bank and verify that the check is real.

New online employment site

Fresno State California State University, Fresno has developed an online employment site for recruiting all vacant non-instructional positions.

The new Fresno State Jobs Online employment Web site is available beginning today (April 9) at jobs.fresnostate.edu.

The online process is designed to make the employment process more efficient and accessible for both job seekers and university hiring managers, said Jan Parten, Human Resources director.

Parten said Fresno State is among the leaders in the 23-campus California State University system to move to online recruiting.

We believe the online system will allow us to be more responsive to applicants and reduce the time it takes to fill positions, said Parten. Were prepared to offer help to anyone who is not as comfortable using online applications as paper ones.

Wilmore: “Watch out for scams”

Interim City Marshal, Jeff Wilmore said Shiflet isn't the first victim of this type of crime and other residents need to look out for potential scam artists.

Wilmore said that any legitimate door-to-door salesman in Groves will have permits issued through the city and will have gone through background checks.

"We take their pictures and have copies of their drivers licenses," he said. "They have to have permits from the city to sell items door-to-door."

To keep citizens safe from other schemers, Wilmore suggested that residents ask salesmen for their credentials before listening to their sales pitch.

"If they don't have a permit, don't do business with them," he said.

The city marshal also said that if anyone feels they were conned by a door-to-door salesman, they should immediately contact the police department to file a report and try to contact the company the check was written out to.
